Talk about safety drills in Korea.

 

• civil defense drill: 민방위 훈련
• take refuge: 대피하다
• come to a standstill: 멈취 서다
• commit something to memory: ~을 암기하다
• evacuation procedures: 대피 요령
• a thing of the past: 과거지사
• as needed: 필요에 따라
• evacuate a building: 건물 밖으로 대피하다
• keep something to a minimum: ~을 최소화하다
• disaster strikes: 재해/재난이 닥치다

Schools and companies all participated, and traffic came to a standstill during the drills.

학교와 기업들도 모두 참여했고, 차량 운행도 훈련 시간 중에는 중단되었다.

 

Everyone tuned in to radio broadcasts for the drill and committed to memory the evacuation procedures.

다들 훈련 라디오 방송에 귀를 귀울이고, 대피 요령 등을 숙지했다.

 

Nowadays, these civil defense drills are a thing of the past.

그러나 요즘에는 이런 민방위 훈련이 진행되지 않는다.

 

It doesn't hurt to be careful.

조심해서 나쁠 건 없잖아.
