The unity of science and philosophy in the old classical sense was perhaps best described by the famous tree of Descartes: The roots of this tree corresponded to metaphysics (the intelligible principles), the trunk to physics (statements of intermediate generality), and the branches and fruit to what we would call applied science.

☞ 데카르트의 나무를 통해 나무의 뿌리 = 형이상학(원리), 몸통 = 물리적 현상, 가지+열매 = 응용과학의 구조를 이용하여 과학과 철학의 고전적 통합을 이야기합니다.

He regarded the whole system of science and philosophy as we today regard science alone; he felt that the metaphysical principles were ultimately justified by their “fruits,” not merely by their self­evidence. What we today call applied science consisted for him not only in mechanics but also in medicine and ethics.

☞ 과학과 철학에 대해 통합적 관점을 가지고 있던 데카르트는 형이상학적 원리(뿌리)와 응용과학(열매)이 연결되어 있다고 생각했고, 오늘날 우리는 과학 자체(열매)만을 생각합니다.

The difficulty was that from the general principles of Cartesian or Aristotelian science-philosophy no results could be derived which were precisely in agreement with observation, but these principles seemed to be intelligible and plausible.

☞ 하지만, 형이상학적 원리들은 그럴듯하게 보이기는 하지만 관찰과 일치하는 결과를 도출하지 못한다는 문제점이 있었죠. 즉, 실용적이지 않았어요.

So the tree was cut in the middle. For the derivation of technical results, it was necessary to start from the physical principles in the trunk.

☞ 그래서 원리(뿌리)와 과학(열매)를 분리해서 생각하게 되었고 나무는 중간에서 잘려 몸통 부분의 물리학적 원리에서 출발하게 되었습니다.

Science in the new sense was to think only of how the fruits would develop from the trunk without regard to the roots.

☞ 새로운 의미에서의 과학(오늘날 우리의 관점)은 뿌리(형이상학적 원리)를 고려하지 않고 몸통(물리학적 원리)에서 어떻게 열매(과학)이 발달했는지를 중점으로 합니다.

👩‍🏫 예전에는 과학과 철학을 통합적 관점으로 바라보았지만, 관찰과 일치하는 결과 도출이 안된다는 실용적인 문제점으로 인해 철학을 분리, 과학만 바라보는 실용적인 관점으로 바뀌게 되었습니다. 보통 밑줄 친 문장은 주제와 관련된 경우가 많고, 여기서도 ① Science(열매) detached itself from philosophical foundations(뿌리) and shifted to deriving outcomes based on physical principles(몸통)이 주제와 일치하는 선지입니다.
