When people gathered in the past, someone stepped forward to foot the bill.

예전에는 모임을 하면, 누군가가 나서서 비용을 지불해야 했다.

 

However, when people have get-togethers these days, it's customary to split the bill.

그러나 요즘은 여러 명이 모이면 비용을 나누어서 내는 것이 보편적이다.

주절에서 it은 가주어 to split the bill은 진주어입니다.

 

A penny-pinching culture is taking root these days.
