Talk about when people choose to tell lies in their lives.

 

• stray from the truth: 거짓말을 하다
• get out of a pickle: 곤란한 상황에서 벗어나다
• spare someone's feelings: ~의 기분을 상하지 않게 하다
• seek someone's understanding: ~의 양해를 구하다
• make up an excuse: 핑계를 대다
• keep one's word: 약속을 지키다
• out of consideration for: ~을 배려해
• save face: 체면을 지키다
• work-related settings: 업무 관련 상황
• personal relations: 개인 관계
• vicious cycle: 악순환

Rather than lying to hurt others, they tell white lies to get out of a pickle or to spare someone's feelings.

남을 해치기 위해서 거짓말을 하기보다는 곤란한 상황을 모면하거나 상대의 기분을 상하지 않게 하기 위해 선의의 거짓말을 한다.

to get과 to spare은 접속사 or을 두고 병렬 구조의 to부정사입니다. 부사적 용법 중 목적에 해당합니다.

 

There are times when people lie out of consideration for others, but more often they lie to save face.

상대방을 배려하기 위해 거짓말을 하는 경우도 많지만, 대부분 본인의 체면을 지키기 위해 거짓말을 한다.

when은 선행사 times를 받는 관계부사입니다. 관계부사는 뒤에 완전한 문장을 이끕니다.

to save face는 부사적 용법 중 목적에 해당합니다.

 

But in the end, people lie to cover up lies, and fall into a vicious cycle.

그러나 궁극적으로는 거짓말을 덮기 위해 또 거짓말을 하게 되는 악순환에 빠진다.

vicious cycle = vicious circle
